“When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;” Proverbs 2:10 KJV
The second chapter of Proverbs is a chapter of actions and results. Verse one set’s the stage with the challenge “If thou wilt receive My words…then.” The reader is encouraged to “incline, apply, seek, cry, and actively pursue” God’s ways. Verse ten begins then to spell out the results of those actions. The verse starts. “When wisdom enters into thy heart.” I have heard it said that the longest 12 inches is from the head to the heart! Simply reading the Word and memorizing it is not what is needed to effect change. Satan himself knows the Word of God most likely better than most believers yet there is no change!
The Hebrew word for enter here is the word meaning to “travel a clear direction,” or to “set a clear goal which is the source of movement!” Kittle in his Theological Dictionary of the New Testament puts it this way; “to make a linear movement to a particular reference point from which one has departed.” The tense of the word carries with it an intensity of action or speed in which it must take place! The believer must take heed to the Word and then make a conscious choice to follow it and put it into action! Jesus told the disciples,
“But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.” Matthew 6:33 AMP
Do you see it? Look at those words of action, “seek, aim, strive,” they all point to a responsibility of the believer to do something regarding His words. The believer must have an attitude of the intensity and seriousness of following God’s Word. The Scripture is clear that,
““Do not store up for yourselves [material] treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal; 21for where your treasure is, there your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers] will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 AMP
WOW! Look at verse 21, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also!” I love the Amplified translation of the Greek here, “your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers.” It is so true that where our heart is out actions and commitments will follow! Just take a look at where you spend your money, time and energy and you will know in an instant where your life is centered!
The promise of the rewards of God’s wisdom are first internal and then manifesting outward! Verses 11-15 are full on inward attitudes leading to outward action.
“Discretion will watch over you, Understanding and discernment will guard you, 12To keep you from the way of evil and the evil man, From the man who speaks perverse things; 13From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14Who find joy in doing evil And delight in the perversity of evil,15Whose paths are crooked, And who are devious in their ways; 16To keep you from the immoral woman;”
Proverbs2:11-15 AMP
Let me ask you today, “where are you going?” “What are you focusing on?” If inventory of your life was taken today, and all of your activity, financial and physical were revealed to the world, what would they see? I love Joshua’s charge to the people,
““And if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:15 AMP
