Dad, I Need You!

1Hear, O children, the instruction of a father, And pay attention [and be willing to learn] so that you may gain understanding and intelligent discernment. 2For I give you good doctrine; Do not [a]turn away from my instruction.” Proverbs 4:1-2 AMP

The Scripture gives an important responsibility to a father, and we must heed its call. In a day and age where society tells us that no one needs a mother or father, we must hold true to the compass of God’s Word! Fathering is more than just having sex with a woman and walking away. A father is or paramount importance to the correct development of a son or daughter. In the above Scripture, the Lord is putting the father in the role of mentor, model, and teacher.

We can clearly see the results in society of the abandonment of God-given roles for the family. There is an interesting Scripture that I think reflects the result of the disintegration of the family model,

“But understand this, that in the last days dangerous times [of great stress and trouble] will come [difficult days that will be hard to bear]. 2For people will be lovers of self [narcissistic, self-focused], lovers of money [impelled by greed], boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane, 3[and they will be] unloving [devoid of natural human affection, calloused and inhumane], irreconcilable, malicious gossips, devoid of self-control [intemperate, immoral], brutal, haters of good, 4traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of [sensual] pleasure rather than lovers of God,” 2 Timothy 3:1-4 AMP

WOW! Can we say that that is a good description of the current situation? Our enemy knows that to change a generation he must infiltrate the minds and lives of the youngest. He is spending billions to steal the minds of our children and the church seems to be sitting idly by when it has been “endued with power from on high!”

“But you will receive power and ability when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses [to tell people about Me] both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.”Acts 1:8 AMP

Fathers are first and foremost the priest of their household. It is their responsibility to be the one who ensures that the honor of God within the family is in its correct place.  It isn’t an afterthought following the sports, dance, or leisure activity! If the father does not model this in their own life, it is doubtful that the children will! Secondly the father is the to be the provider of the family. I very well know and understand that in this day-and-age it takes more than one to make ends meet. I am however saying that a father should not sacrifice the things of God for the things of the world. Thirdly the father is the protector of the family. The protector provides a safe environment for life to take place. It is the protector’s responsibility to go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the welfare of the protested. That means there has to be a dying to self and desires in order to meet the need of the members of the family!

In our opening verse, King Solomon is telling us that his father, even though he had a jaded history modeled something more than just a biological connection with his son. We know that God called David, “a man after My own heart.” This connection and reverence was seen by Solomon and impressed on his life. It is evident that it is so when God asks Solomon what he wanted. Solomon did not ask for earthly things but rather the wisdom from God to be righteous and fair.

Let me encourage you fathers out there today; your legacy will be imprinted on your son or daughter. The Bible is clear that you should “train you a child in the way they should go.” That means how you live will be more important that what you say! If you train them up to put God other than first, that is exactly what they will do.  Chose this year to put God first in everything you do and let that be the testimony of your children.

Have a blessed New Year, Pastor Ken
