Proverbs Chapter 6
As we progress through the book of Proverbs, we came to chapter 6. Chapter 6 addresses a number of various issues; Verses 1-5 are a caution against rash suretiship. We do not often see the word “surety” but do know the word “cosigner.” Both words mean exactly the same thing! A cosigner is a person that will take FULL responsibility for paying back a loan, along with the primary borrower. Verses 6-11 is a rebuke to the slothful. Another word we don’t hear often used but it refers to, in simple terms, lazy people. These are the people that have an aversion to work. Verses 12-15 talk about the character and fate of a mischievous man. These are those who cause or show a fondness towards causing harm or trouble in a playful way. We all have heard the statement; “I really didn’t mean it!” Verses 16-19 are of great import as they tell us the seven things that God hates. Verses 20-23 are exhortation to us to make the Word of God familiar to our lives. Verses 24-35 are a repeated warning of the pernicious consequences of the sin of whoredom. It drives home the fact that sin is damming in the next life and impoverishing in this one!
Please take some time to read through Proverbs chapter 6 as we get started on our journey. Remember the premise for our daily walk through the Word. Remember Proverbs chapter 1?
“To know [skillful and godly] wisdom and instruction; To discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight, 3To receive instruction in wise behavior and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, Righteousness, justice, and integrity; 4That prudence (good judgment, astute common sense) may be given to the naive or inexperienced [who are easily misled], And knowledge and discretion (intelligent discernment) to the youth, 5The wise will hear and increase their learning, And the person of understanding will acquire wise counsel and the skill [to steer his course wisely and lead others to the truth],”
Proverbs 1:2-5 AMP
We are learning that the interpretation of life’s path is reveled through God’s Word. The believer must, with all haste,
“Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 AMP
Life is hard and the realities and consequences of sin are always surrounding us. The Scriptures give us a solid place to stand when we are trying to make those “life decisions.” If we will,
“Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. 6[b]In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]. 7Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil.
Proverbs 3:5-7 AMP
I love the words in the book of Jerimiah,
“Thus says the LORD, “Let not the one who is wise and skillful boast in his insight; let not the one who is mighty and powerful boast in his strength; let not the one who is rich boast in his [temporal satisfactions and earthly] abundance;24but let the one who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me [and acknowledges Me and honors Me as God and recognizes without any doubt], that I am the LORD who practices lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on the earth, for in these things I delight,” says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 9:23-24 AMP
