Flirting with Disaster

“For at the window of my house I looked out through my lattice. 7And among the naive [the inexperienced and gullible], I saw among the youths A young man lacking [good] sense, 8Passing through the street near her corner; And he took the path to her house”

Proverbs 7:6-8 AMP

After exhorting us to keep the Word of close (v1-3), we are now shown in real terms the dangers of flirting with sin. Of course, he is speaking about the power of sexual sin, but the adulterous women is a personification of the sin and its drawing powers over the naïve. The word here refers to “persons that are easily deceived or persuaded, showing lack of wisdom and understanding, yet having some capacity to change their condition.” (Dictionary of Biblical Languages) The Apostle Paul reminded the believer,

“Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth.”

2 Timothy 2:15 AMP

It is each or our responsibilities to correctly handle the Word of God. The word “workman” in the Greek speaks about the skill of a surgeon. That sharp knife can either bring healing if used correctly or cause a great deal of damage if not! When it comes to interpreting the Word od God, generally it means exactly what it says! We are not to dissect it and try to find the loophole that will allow us to entertain our sinful nature. In the above example, the lack of correctly applying God’s Word will ultimately end in disaster. In verse 8 we are told that this young man deliberately “…took the path to her house!” It was a conscious decision even though he may have perceived danger ahead. The Psalmist wrote,

“Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous (deliberate, willful) sins; Let them not rule and have control over me. Then I will be blameless (complete), And I shall be acquitted of great transgression.” Psalms 19:13 AMP

The Apostle Peter wrote in regard to sin,

“Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous (deliberate, willful) sins; Let them not rule and have control over me. Then I will be blameless (complete), And I shall be acquitted of great transgression.”

2 Peter 1:4 AMP

We must remember that God will do His part, but we must do ours! Flirting with sin is dangerous because we still have an overwhelming sin nature that is always seeking to have its way. God gave Cain some solid advice,

“If you do well [believing Me and doing what is acceptable and pleasing to Me], will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well [but ignore My instruction], sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you [to overpower you], but you must master it.”

Genesis 4:7 AMP

We are in this mess because Adam and Eve could not master the power of sin. There is only one solution for this problem.

“For the one who sows to his flesh [his sinful capacity, his worldliness, his disgraceful impulses] will reap from the flesh ruin and destruction, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life”

Galatians 6:8 AMP

We must daily walk in the power of the Holy Spirit remembering that it is only thorough His power that we can have victory and master the beast that lives within!

Have a victorious day! Pastor Ken
