“He who [maliciously] winks the eye [of evil intent] causes trouble; And the babbling fool [who is arrogant and thinks himself wise] will come to ruin. 11The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life and his words of wisdom are a source of blessing, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence and evil.”
Proverbs 10:10-11 AMP
Today we are given another characteristic of those who consciously cause trouble. The term “He who winks” is an interesting Hebrew word. The word means “to make a non-verbal signal by blinking the eyelid. It indicates the acknowledgement of a malicious or insidious action. It is used in the New Testament for the action of Judas to identify Jesus in the garden! Unfortunately, we see this activity in many places of governance today. Those in what they perceive as positions of power often mock the righteous for their commitment to the truth! The second part of the verse describes them correctly. They are actually arrogant, babbling fools (pratting)! The word “pratting” in the Cambridge Dictionary is defined as “to talk behave stupidly, especially when you should be behaving in a responsible way.” The Hebrew word is similar in definition, but it adds an interesting twist. The Hebrew discribes it as “a combination of words spoken in a way to communicate a message using a distinct verbal code used by a group.” What group better fits this description than the gender blending nonsense that we hear preached from our schoolboards and teachers! Clearly the verse warns us that such behavior will end in ruin. The book of Romans reminds us,
“For [God does not overlook sin and] the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who in their wickedness suppress and stifle the truth,”
Romans 1: 18 AMP
“Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory and majesty and excellence of the immortal God for [f]an image [worthless idols] in the shape of mortal man and birds and four-footed animals and reptiles. 24Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their own hearts to [sexual] impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them [abandoning them to the degrading power of sin], 25because [by choice] they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.”
Romans 1:22-25 AMP
Can you see it? The end result of all this is sexual immorality. Notice also that it is the “the degrading power of sin” that is the source of all this craziness!
The righteous however are described in quite a different manner! We are told that those who follow the truth of righteousness (moral rightness) will be like a fountain of life. Jesus told His disciples that,
“Now on the last and most important day of the feast, Jesus stood and called out [in a loud voice], “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! 38He who believes in Me [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me], as the Scripture has said, ‘From his innermost being will flow continually rivers of living water.’”
John 7:37-38 AMP
It goes on to say that it is “His Word” are the source of this blessing of living water! The Word of God is alive and powerful unto the changing of even the vilest of sinners. There is no other source on planet Earth that can change a heart and restore it to its creator!
What kind of water is pouring from your life? Is it giving hope to the lost around you? Is it speaking the truth in love? Take time today to examine your words and allow the Holy Spirit to use you as a source of living water to those thirsty in this dry and weary land!
Have a blessed day, Pastor Ken
Amen pastor.
