“The wicked are overthrown [by their evil] and are no more, But the house of the [consistently] righteous will stand [securely].
Proverbs 12:7 AMP
An interesting verse regarding the effects of sin on a person’s life. Notice that the writer used the word “overthrown.” The Hebrew word means to “be without legitimate authority with a focus on the durability of lastingness of the situation.” The Scripture is clear that sin is enjoyable for a season!
“By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25because he preferred to endure the hardship of the people of God rather than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin. 26He considered the reproach of the Christ [that is, the rebuke he would suffer for his faithful obedience to God] to be greater wealth than all the treasures of Egypt; for he looked ahead to the reward [promised by God]. .”
Hebrews 11:23-26 AMP
Notice that the resisting of sin is an enduring process. The lure of pleasure and fulfilment of the flesh is a powerful force. The Apostle Paul said it best,
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run [their very best to win], but only one receives the prize? Run [your race] in such a way that you may seize the prize and make it yours! 25Now every athlete who [goes into training and] competes in the games is disciplined and exercises self-control in all things. They do it to win a [h]crown that withers, but we [do it to receive] an imperishable [crown that cannot wither]. 26Therefore I do not run without a definite goal; I do not flail around like one beating the air [just shadow boxing]. 27But [like a boxer] I strictly discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached [the gospel] to others, I myself will not somehow be disqualified [as unfit for service].
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 AMP
Those who chose the path of righteousness will encounter challenges along the way, but that discipline will yield eternal rewards and stand securely. The way of the wicked though cannot be sustained. I remember that the drugs were the best thing in my life. The problem quickly became that I could not sustain it! The more I used the drugs there more I needed to reach the same high. That meant more money and ultimately a different kind of drug; something more powerful! That is trap of the enemy. A life of sin cannot be sustained and will ultimately destroy the victim! The Apostle Paul again wrote to the Corinthians about the temporal substance of this word’s pleasures;
“those who use the world [taking advantage of its opportunities], as though they did not make full use of it. For the outward form of this world [its present social and material nature] is passing away.
1 Corinthians 7:31 AMP
The Apostle John put it this way,
“Do not love the world [of sin that opposes God and His precepts], nor the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world–the lust and sensual craving of the flesh and the lust and longing of the eyes and the boastful pride of life [pretentious confidence in one’s resources or in the stability of earthly things]– these do not come from the Father, but are from the world. 17The world is passing away, and with it its lusts [the shameful pursuits and ungodly longings]; but the one who does the will of God and carries out His purpose’s lives forever.
1 John 2:16-17 AMP
