Let Your Yes be Yes

“A faithful and trustworthy witness will not lie, But a false witness speaks lies.”

Proverbs 14:5 AMP

Today we read the description of a person who walks in integrity. A trustworthy person is one who does not lie or bend the truth. We live in a day and age that has no respect for the truth. In fact, if you speak the truth, you are called a liar! The marks of dependability, reliability, and straightforwardness that pour forth from the life of one committed to the truth! It reminds me of the words of Jesus,

“But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’ [a firm yes or no]; anything more than that comes from the evil one.”

Matthew 5:37 AMP

We read that the “faithful” one will not lie. The word faithful here is the word meaning to “have the quality of reliability; to be in a state of being dependable and loyal to a person or standard.” Do you see it? “To be in a state of being dependable and loyal.” Faithfulness is more than lip service. Faithfulness is the very thing that allows the Kingdom of God to more forward! Before we came to the cross, we were plagued by unreliability and self-centeredness! When I was under the influence of the drugs, I was the only one I cared about! I would find any reason to call off work. Even when I was at work, I did not give my employer a full-days effort. But now, my life is consumed with serving the Savior of my soul! I think that the greatest testimony of the delivering power of God was the day when I became a paramedic and was handed the keys to the drug box! If the old Ken was there the drugs wouldn’t be! That leads to the second word in the verse, “trustworthy.”

The word trustworthy is made up of two separate words, trust and worthy. The word was used to describe confidence in a weapon or skill. The word worthy describes one who is able to stand in a contractual relationship. When you go to the bank to get a loan, the bank is gauging your ability to “stand in the contractual relationship.” They are measuring both your ability to enter into the agreement, confidence, and then your ability to fulfill the requirements of the loan, worthiness. Isn’t interesting that the picture that we are given in the heavenlies is that all gathered around the throne of the Lamb are crying “Worthy is the Lamb!”

“Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and [the voice] of the living creatures and the elders; and they numbered myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands (innumerable), 12saying in a loud voice, “Worthy and deserving is the Lamb that was sacrificed to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.” 13And I heard every created thing that is in heaven or on earth or under the earth [in Hades, the realm of the dead] or on the sea, and everything that is in them, saying [together], “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb (Christ), be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”

Revelation 5:11-13 AMP

Our whole hope of salvation rests upon the trustworthiness of the word of God through Christ! I love the words of Paul to Timothy,

“I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has granted me [the needed] strength and made me able for this, because He considered me faithful and trustworthy, putting me into service [for this ministry], 13even though I was formerly a blasphemer [of our Lord] and a persecutor [of His church] and a shameful and outrageous and violent aggressor [toward believers]. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief. 14The grace of our Lord [His amazing, unmerited favor and blessing] flowed out in superabundance [for me, together] with the faith and love which are [realized] in Christ Jesus. 15This is a faithful and trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance and approval, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost. 16Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost [of sinners], Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example or pattern for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.”

1 Timothy 1:12-15 AMP

Remember that we are called to be trustworthy with the command of Christ to live our lives in a way that brings honor and glory to God. Remember that it is God who you are now serving, not the guy who issues your paycheck! Have a victorious day! Pastor Ken
