Faith or Foolishness?

“The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools deceives them.”

Proverbs 14:8 BSB

In the past we discussed the issue of faith. Today I want to address the issue of foolishness. I often hear from unbelievers that it is foolishness to believe in God. Well, let’s take a look! The dictionary defines the word foolishness as “someone who refuses to listen to wisdom or lean from discipline; the quality of being unaware, stupid, or not showing good judgment.” The Oxford dictionary states, “actually or apparently deficient in intelligence, demonstrating the character of being or seeming unable to use good judgement, discretion, or good sense.”

The Scripture call man to be reasonable and evaluate his condition in terms of reality! We read in the book of Isaiah,

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be like wool.”

Isaiah 1:18 AMP

We are never told to simply believe but rather to weigh God’s proposition! The Hebrew word “reason” used here is a legal term meaning to “prove that which is right to be without refute or accusations.” In simple terms, that which is true! When walking by faith then is not a foolish proposition! Our challenge this month is to weight the promises of God, and based on His ability, bring them to pass. Every facet of creation points to a creator. It takes however a humility to admit that we, in and of ourselves, don’t really understand the truth because sin is tainting our vision! It is only when we agree with God on this one point, that our sin can be as white as snow, that the veil is lifted, and we can see more clearly than ever before! Remember the foundational verse of the book of Proverbs?

“The [spiritually ignorant] fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have committed repulsive and unspeakable deeds; There is no one who does good.”

Proverbs 14:1 AMP

Now, it is foolish of the believer however to “not” believe the Word of God! As we are praying the Scriptures this month, we can be assured that this is what God desires as He has revealed it to us through His Word! It is not something we made up or simply wished for. The book of Isaiah tells us,

“So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; It will not return to Me void (useless, without result), Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”

Isaiah 55:11 AMP

This whole exercise is to help us put our faith and trust in what He has said and purposed so it is a reasonable action to employ! What would be unreasonable or foolish also would be to disregard the warnings of the Scripture that might hinder our receiving the fulfilment of the promise. Things such as,

“So if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and while there you remember that your brother has something [such as a grievance or legitimate complaint] against you, 24leave your offering there at the altar and go. First make peace with your brother, and then come and present your offering”

Matthew 5:23-24 AMP

or

“If I regard sin and baseness in my heart [that is, if I know it is there and do nothing about it], The Lord will not hear [me];”

Psalms 66:18 AMP

or

“But love [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for] your enemies, and do good, and lend, [k]expecting nothing in return; for your reward will be great (rich, abundant), and you will be sons of the Most High; because He Himself is kind and gracious and good to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36Be merciful (responsive, compassionate, tender) just as your [heavenly] Father is merciful.”

Luke 6:35-36 AMP

Trusting is God is not foolishness. It is reasonable and logical to honor the One who designed and created me! It would be foolish of me however not to live then in the goodness of His grace and the provision of His love!

(Psm 66:18; Eph 5:26) I will listen to Your voice and accept instruction that I may gain wisdom and righteousness. (Proverbs 19:20) today I receive wisdom from above that is pure, peaceable, and gentle, that is full of mercy and will bring forth good fruit in my life (James 3:17) and I will praise You Lord and receive Your council even in my night rest! (Psalms 16:7) In Jesus name…Amen
