“6Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in [union with] Him [reflecting His character in the things you do and say–living lives that lead others away from sin], 7having been deeply rooted [in Him] and now being continually built up in Him and [becoming increasingly more] established in your faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing in it with gratitude.” Colossians 2:6-7 AMP
From the moment that we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit begins His transformational work in our lives. Salvation is a call out of darkness into a union of holiness with our Lord and Savior. The gift of Salvation is more than mere words! Many have confessed but their lives process something entirely different! Our verse today clearly sets forth the mandate of walking in union worth Christ! We must always remember that,
“I have been crucified with Christ [that is, in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith [by adhering to, relying on, and completely trusting] in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20 AMP
The fact of the matter is that we are supposed to have “died with Christ!” It takes a conscious choice now to live by faith adhering to, relying on, and completely trusting Christ! That my friends is wholly our choice. AS we chose to reject the sin-nature of our flesh we become more conformed to image of Christ in our lives. Notice that our verse today tells us that in following Christ we become “deeply rooted, continually built upon Him” resulting in a more stable walk in our lives. All this rests on our choice now to exercise faith and trust in Him and His promises. The word “rooted” appears only in two verses in the New Testament. We find the first here and the other at Ephesians 3:17.
“May He grant you out of the riches of His glory, to be strengthened and spiritually energized with power through His Spirit in your inner self, [indwelling your innermost being and personality], 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through your faith. And may you, having been [deeply] rooted and [securely] grounded in love,” Ephesians 3:17 AMP
Again, we see that it is according to “His” riches that we find strength and desire to walk this road called life. Here we find that word rooted again talking about its stability to sustain our faith. I am reminded of the words of Jesus in discussing the importance of the Word of God.
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not practice what I tell you? 47Everyone who comes to Me and listens to My words and obeys them, I will show you whom he is like: 48he is like a [far-sighted, practical, and sensible] man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and yet could not shake it, because it had been securely built and founded on the rock.” Luke 6:47-48 AMP
We see here the importance of being “far-sighted, practical, and sensible.” The Spirit-filled life looks to eternity. The fleshly life seeks it fulfillment in the here and now! Each and every day we should becoming more conformed to the image of Christ in our lives. I cannot express more the importance of your life’s testimony! My prayer for you today is the same as the Apostle Paul.” Having been deeply rooted [in Him] and now being continually built up in Him and [becoming increasingly more] established in your faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing in it with gratitude, may the God of all glory and grace keep you and minister to you as you walk this road of life!” In Jesus name, Amen!
