“But godliness actually is a source of great gain when accompanied by contentment [that contentment which comes from a sense of inner confidence based on the sufficiency of God]. 7For we have brought nothing into the world, so [it is clear that] we cannot take anything out of it, either. 8But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9But those who [are not financially ethical and] crave to get rich [with a compulsive, greedy longing for wealth] fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction [leading to personal misery]. 10For the love of money [that is, the greedy desire for it and the willingness to gain it unethically] is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves [through and through] with many sorrows.” 1 Timothy 6:6-10 AMP
Our verses today remind us that there are more important things in this life than riches! The Apostle is reminding Timothy that yes, godliness is important but the greatest distraction to that is the pursuit of riches. Notice the word “contentment” in the opening verse. This is the Greek word meaning to be “self-sufficiency” or “Satisfied” with where your are today. This state of contentment is based upon that which God has provided for us.
I am reminded of the statement of Jesus to His disciples.
“But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.” Matthew 6:33 AMP
What things was He talking about? The things that we need to make it through this life! It isn’t wrong to want, but it is wrong to sacrifice the things of God for our own pleasure. I have asked my congregation many times, “I God never blesses you again, are you content in the fact that your name is written in the book of life? One of the hardest subjects for the Pastor to address is that of tithing. It seems like people are willing to give to everything expect the work of the Lord! It is easy to give $1.00 when we get 10 or even $100.00 when we get $1000.00 but talk about tithing on an income of $3000.00 a month and its like asking someone for their first born! If we are content with where we are then giving to the Lord isn’t a big deal!
Remember that we are called stewards of these earthly possessions. Everything we have in our hand is a gift from God and it belongs to Hin. The steward is allowed to enjoy the things of the master but when the master has need of it, it must be released! It is a great thing to walk in godliness but an even greater thing to be content! Chise today to honor God with not only your finances but your time and your possessions! Have a blessed day, Pastor Ken
