Share what you have!

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Hebrews 13:16 ESV

As the Christmas holiday draws near, people seem to experience an increase in the spirit of giving one to another. Many movies fill the airways of heart wrenching of lives struggling through some difficult situation which is suddenly met by the generosity or sacrifice of another. The age-old adage “to give is better to receive” certainly is true. It is a good feeling to see the joy of a child or the thanks of a loved one as we forget ourselves and touch the lives of others. Sadly, as the season draws to a close the hustle and bustle of life resumes and many go back to the “me first” way of life. The Christian however is called to a high standard. Our verse today reminds us that we should always be in the “how can I be a blessing to others” mode! I would like to point out that our verse isn’t talking about monetary gifts but rather the sharing of something you have that others need but do not have! One of my favorite verses is from the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians.

“Blessed [gratefully praised and adored] be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, 4who comforts and encourages us in every trouble so that we will be able to comfort and encourage those who are in any kind of trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2 Corinthains 1:3-4 AMP

The greatest gift we have is the redeemed life that Jesus gave us. It is from that vantage point we must remember that we are living epistles written unto the age! Many of us have been through some extremely difficult situations. Even though falls and failures plagued us, His grace eventually gave us the strength and ability to overcome. I am reminded of this verse again to the Corinthains.

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give us the Light of the knowledge of the glory and majesty of God [clearly revealed] in the face of Christ. 7But we have this precious treasure [the good news about salvation] in [unworthy] earthen vessels [of human frailty], so that the grandeur and surpassing greatness of the power will be [shown to be] from God [His sufficiency] and not from ourselves.” 2 Corinthians 4:6-7 AMP

Concern for others is generally an inconvenience at best. Everyone has a schedule, work, family etc. we must however remember that we are called to follow the example of our Savior.

Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility],Philippians 2:5 AMP

Let me encourage you this season to look around and see those who are struggling. God has brought them near you so that they might see there is a hope and future in store for them also! Remember that as we seek first the Kingdom of God, all that we need will be added. No greater joy is there than to see a life changed because someone saw the light in your life! Have a blessed day, Pastor Ken
