Thirsting for God

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”
Matthew 5:6 AMP

Have you ever had an itch in the middle of your back that you simply could not reach? You stretch, twist, and even rub against the corner of a wall, hoping for relief. For a moment, it feels like you’ve reached it — only to realize the itch remains. That experience mirrors something deeper in the human heart.

There is an ache within us that cannot be satisfied by external solutions. Many attempt to scratch that spiritual itch with success, relationships, accomplishments, entertainment, or even religious activity. Yet the dissatisfaction lingers. Jesus identifies the source of true satisfaction:

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”
Matthew 5:6 AMP

Hunger and thirst are not mild desires — they are urgent needs. When you are truly hungry, nothing else distracts you. When you are truly thirsty, no substitute will suffice. In the same way, spiritual hunger points to something essential. Righteousness, in its fullest sense, is not merely moral behavior. It is restored right standing and fellowship with God. To understand this, we must go back to the beginning.

“And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.”
Genesis 2:7 AMP

Humanity was created with the very breath of God. Life was not merely physical — it was relational. Adam and Eve walked in unhindered fellowship with their Creator. But that fellowship was broken through sin.

“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all people [no one being able to stop it or escape its power], because they all sinned.”
Romans 5:12 AMP

The separation was spiritual before it was physical. The breath of communion was disrupted. The itch began. Yet what was lost in the Garden was restored at the Cross.

“For He made Christ who knew no sin to [judicially] be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 AMP

Through Christ, righteousness was not merely modeled — it was imparted. Fellowship was reopened. Access was restored.

“And since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus… let us approach God with a true and sincere heart in unqualified assurance of faith.”
Hebrews 10:19, 22 AMP

The deepest hunger of the human soul is not for achievement or recognition. It is for restored communion with the living God. That is why substitutes fail. The ache remains until we return to the Source of life itself. Jesus promises that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be satisfied.

The question is not whether you are hungry. The question is: what are you feeding on?

Today, if you sense that longing within you, do not attempt to quiet it with lesser things. Lean into it. Let it drive you toward deeper fellowship with Christ.

Return to the breath.
Return to the relationship.

Have a blessed day,
Pastor Ken
