“Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].” Philippians 4:6–7 AMP
There are so many things today that try to steal our peace. Bills, relationships, work pressures, and family matters constantly press in. So where can one find peace among all the noise? Our Scripture tells us there is a peace from God that surpasses understanding. Paul gives us a clear pathway: prayer, petition, and thanksgiving. The first step is prayer. Not rote, repeatable prayers written in a book, but sincere communication that flows from the heart. Scripture assures us:
“Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].” Hebrews 4:16 AMP
There is a peaceful transfer that takes place when we unload our burdens upon Him and take up His assurances. Everything we enjoy that is good and worthwhile comes by the grace of God. We do not deserve it, we cannot earn it, yet God pours it out upon us like refreshing rain.
“The LORD will give [unyielding and impenetrable] strength to His people;
The LORD will bless His people with peace.”
Psalm 29:11 AMP
Once the fury of anxiety begins to settle through prayer, we move to petition. Petition may include asking God for personal needs, spiritual growth, guidance, protection, deliverance, and help for others. It refocuses our attention on God’s ability rather than our limitations. It reminds us that we are dependent upon One who is fully able. Petition is not manipulation or bargaining. It is the humble act of presenting our needs to God in trust and submission to His will. King David modeled this beautifully:
“Let me know Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; For You [and only You] I wait [expectantly] all the day long.” Psalm 25:4–5 AMP
Then we come to thanksgiving. Giving thanks to God is a demonstration of faith. It declares, “God, I trust You.” Gratitude shifts our focus from what is troubling us to Who is sustaining us. And then comes the promise — the peace of God. This peace does not necessarily mean that circumstances change. It means we are changed in the midst of them. The peace of God “stands guard” over our hearts and minds — like a soldier protecting a city gate. Anxiety may knock, but His peace stands watch.
Let me encourage you today to kneel before the throne of grace. Bring Him your burdens. Present your petitions. Offer Him thanksgiving. And allow Him to pour out His peace upon you.
Have a peaceful day,
Pastor Ken
