Facing the Storm – John 18:4

“Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward and asked them, ‘Whom are you seeking?’” John 18:4 NLT

There are moments in life when we are called to step forward and face the storm. Jesus knew exactly what was coming. Yet He did not retreat, He stepped forward. Earlier in the Garden of Gethsemane, we see the weight of that moment:

“My soul is deeply grieved… My Father… if it is possible… let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” Matthew 26:38–39 AMP

Jesus revealed the reality of His humanity, deep anguish, real emotion, and physical weakness. But He also demonstrated something greater: A surrendered will, and a determined spirit. God does not ignore our weakness, but He looks deeper, to the condition of our hearts. Jesus experiencing the weight of temptation warned His disciples:

“Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41 AMP

This tension between spirit and flesh is something we all face. Even at the beginning of His ministry, Jesus encountered it. After His baptism, He was led into the wilderness and tempted by the devil:

Now Jesus, full of and in perfect communication with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2for forty days, being tempted by the devil” Luke 4:2 AMP

In that moment, the enemy offered Him a path that avoided suffering—a shortcut around the cross. No pain. No sacrifice. No cost. Only compromise. But Jesus refused. He chose obedience over ease. Later, Jesus warned Peter that Satan desired to sift him like wheat. The battle would not just be external; it would be deeply personal. And it still is today. But here is the encouragement:

“Because He Himself in His humanity has suffered in being tempted, He is able to help and provide immediate assistance to those who are being tempted and exposed to suffering.” Hebrews 2:18 AMP

Jesus doesn’t stand at a distance and say, “Figure it out.” He understands. He strengthens. He helps So when the storm comes, and it will, what will you do or to whom will you turn for help?

Will you step forward in faith?
Or shrink back in fear?

Will you rely on your strength?
Or turn to the One who has already overcome?

Reflection Question

Where are you facing pressure or temptation right now and are you actively watching and praying, or trying to handle it on your own?

Have a blessed day,
Pastor Ken

  1. Of course! This message highlights how Jesus, fully aware of His coming suffering, stepped forward with surrendered will. He showed us that, even in our weakness, God calls us to trust Him, pray, and rely on His strength rather than our own.
God bless you abundantly dear man of God for this wonderful message
