“Cast your burden on the LORD [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you;
He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” Psalm 55:22 AMP
“Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.”
These familiar words, written by Joseph Scriven in 1855, were born out of deep personal loss. After losing two fiancées just before the wedding, one to drowning and another to illness, Scriven wrote a poem that would become one of the most beloved hymns of the church.
His message was simple: We are carrying burdens we were never meant to bear. Scripture reminds us that our Savior understands this reality:
“He was despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and pain and acquainted with grief; And like One from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we did not appreciate His worth or esteem Him.” Isaiah 53:3 AMP
Jesus experienced grief. In one example, we see Him at the tomb of Lazarus, standing with Mary and Martha in their sorrow. He does not rebuke them; He identifies with them. “Jesus wept.” Those two words remind us that He fully understands our pain. Yet He does not leave us there. He brings hope to the hopeless, life to the lifeless, and restoration to the broken.
Our verse today calls us to respond: “Cast your burden on the LORD…” The experience of grief is real and deep. Unfortunately, it is a reality of sin’s work in this life. Our verse today reminds us that we are to cast all those cares on Him who loves us! The Amplified says, release it. Not carry it. Not manage it. Release it!
That does not mean the pain disappears immediately. But it does mean we no longer carry it alone. Over time, I have come to realize that many of the burdens I carry are not due to their weight, but due to my struggle to trust God fully with them. And so I hold on…And I carry what He has already offered to take. Jesus gives us this invitation:
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. 29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST (renewal, blessed quiet) FOR YOUR SOULS. 30For My yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 AMP” Matthew 11:28–30 AMP
Rest is not found in control. It is found in surrender, and surrender is expressed through prayer. Prayer is not just asking for a fix, it is releasing and trusting. It is placing what we cannot carry into the hands of the One who can.
So, let me ask you: What burden are you still holding on to? What have you not yet released to Him? Take time today to slow down, bring it to Him, and trust Him to carry what you cannot.
Reflection Question
What are you holding onto today that God is asking you to release to Him in prayer?
Have a blessed day,

Absolutely right
Release your burdens to God—don’t carry what He has already offered to take. True peace comes when you surrender everything to Him in prayer.
God with you such a wonderful message
