“Not to us, O LORD, not to us, But to Your name give glory Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth and faithfulness.” Psalm 115:1 AMP

As I read this today, a question came rushing into my mind, “Am I giving God the glory in all areas of my life? The Psalmist is acknowledging that there is no one else who desires the glory and then answers with the reason why. “Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth and faithfulness.” Woking with the recovery program, step 2 acknowledges that, “We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” While those of us who have been rescued from the prison of the enemy through the truth and faithfulness of God, every one of us owes a debt that we cannot pay. Wherever you find yourself today, you are there by the truth and faithfulness of God!

The Psalm goes on to describes the lack of power of worthless idols to deliver, mocking the very things that they were attending to. Today, there are not many stone or wooden idols left that people gather around. We read in the book of Deuteronomy the following.

“For they went and served other gods and worshiped them, [false] gods whom they have not known and whom He had not allotted (given) to them.” Deuteronomy 29:26 AMP

So, what are these “new gods” that they did not know? To understand that question we need to define what worship is! One definition I read was, “Adulation: Treating a person, idea, or object with extravagant respect or devotion (such as idolizing a celebration, possession, or hobby) How about this one, “Whatever captures a person’s ultimate time, affection and treasure functions as their primary source of attention.” Are you getting it? If we are honest, all kind of things can be put in those categories! If you were to dissect your life’s activities would God occupy all those spots? The plan of the enemy is to keep us so committed to so many things that there isn’t time to consider if they have become idols in our life!

The Apostle Paul gave a warning about returning to the worthless idols of this life in the book of Galatians.

“Before you Gentiles knew God, you were slaves to so-called gods that do not even exist. 9So now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world?” Galatians 4:8-9 NLT

God has called us out of those things and into a wonderful, living relationship with Himself. The Apostle Peter challenged those who have been rescued from that life to consider their former way.

“You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols. 4Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you.” 1 Peter 4:3-4 NLT

Once you have tasted of God’s lovingkindness, truthfulness and faithfulness why would you ever want to go back! The only response then is to give the glory where it is due…His throne! Have a blessed day, Pastor Ken
