“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you [who are willing to learn] with My eye upon you.” Psalm 32:8 AMP
Have you ever been lost while driving your car? Or wandered into the wilderness and suddenly realized you had no idea where you were? Maybe a GPS app sent you down the wrong road. It’s a frightening feeling. Now imagine realizing that all of eternity hinges on how you live your life.
Before coming to Christ, many of us did not think much about our eternal future or even whether God truly existed. Life was about doing whatever we wanted and going wherever we pleased. But once we come to know the Creator of our lives, we begin to care deeply about where our story is headed.
Scripture tells us to “work out” our salvation — not meaning we earn it, but that we now live out the new life God has given us. Yet even as believers, there are moments when we feel unsure about which direction to take. That is why our verse today is so comforting: God promises to instruct, teach, and guide those who are willing to learn. The book of Proverbs gives similar instruction:
“Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].”
Proverbs 3:5–6 AMP
Trusting the Lord with all our heart is the first step to following His guidance. God’s ways are often very different from our own, so we must learn to quiet our hearts and listen for His voice.
When Adam and Eve leaned on their own understanding, they traded paradise for the consequences of sin. Because of our fallen nature, we must learn not to let emotions or circumstances guide us. Notice something important in Psalm 32:8: the promise of guidance is given to those who are willing to learn.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life].” 2 Corinthians 5:17 AMP
As born-again believers, everything becomes new. That can feel unsettling because we are stepping out of old patterns and comfort zones. We must learn to unlearn the habits of our former life. But as we walk in this new way, paths begin to form. Paths become walkways, and walkways eventually become roads. Over time, walking in God’s way becomes more natural.
Over time, walking in God’s way becomes more natural.
This spiritual awakening gives us a choice about which road we will travel. And God promises that when we choose His path, He will guide us.
Through the prophet Isaiah, God declared:
“Your ears will hear a word behind you, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right or to the left.” Isaiah 30:21 AMP
Learning and trusting are both processes. There will be moments when the direction God leads does not seem to make sense. When you find yourself in that place, remember the promise: trust in the Lord with all your heart.
He is watching over you, instructing you, and guiding you every step of the way.
Have a blessed day,
