The Journey – Psalm 84:5

“Blessed and greatly favored is the man whose strength is in You, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.” Psalm 84:5 AMP

Do you remember the excitement of a journey as a child? The anticipation, the preparation, the sense of wonder about what lay ahead? Scripture reminds us that we, too, are on a journey—but this journey is not merely physical. It is spiritual, and its destination is found in God Himself.

In Old Testament times, the people of God traveled great distances to Jerusalem, the center of worship. These pilgrimages were not simply about reaching a place; they represented obedience, devotion, and a longing for God’s presence. The Psalmist captured this joy:

“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the LORD.’” Psalm 122:1 AMP

This journey was not easy. It involved harsh terrain, physical danger, and long, exhausting travel—ascending from the region of the Dead Sea up toward the mountain of the Lord. Yet despite the difficulty, there was joy and determination in the hearts of those who made the journey. Today, God still calls us on a journey—but it is no longer an external pilgrimage.

It is an inward one.

Scripture makes this clear:

“Do you not know and understand that you the church are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells permanently in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16 AMP

God no longer dwells in a physical structure made of stone or fabric. He dwells within His people.

In the past, the people traveled roads to reach the temple. Today, the pathway is within us.

The Word of God becomes the path.
The Holy Spirit becomes the guide.
And the destination is conformity to the image of Christ.

The Apostle Paul describes this journey:

“…that, regarding your previous way of life, you put off your old self… and be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind… and put on the new self…” Ephesians 4:21–24 AMP

Notice the language: continually renewed.

This is not a one-time event, but an ongoing transformation—a continual work of God within us. It is the journey from who we were to who we are becoming in Christ.

Our opening verse tells us where to find the path:

“…in whose heart are the highways to Zion.”

The road is no longer beneath our feet—it is within our hearts.

So the question is no longer, “Where do I need to go?”
But rather, “Am I willing to let God lead me within?”

Reflection Question

Are you truly embracing the inward journey God is calling you to, or are you still looking for something external to satisfy what only He can transform within?

Take time today to look inward. You may be surprised at what God reveals.

Have a blessed day,
Pastor Ken
