Where are You Running?

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs to it and is safe and set on high [far above evil].” Proverbs 10:18 AMP

In the day and age of great military machines and force, we do not understand the importance of a “strong tower.”

In ancient times, cities were surrounded by walls providing protection from an attack of an enemy seeking to destroy the inhabitants. Towers were usually added to areas that were susceptible to the attack, especially when there was no natural defensive topography to provide protection. Construction of the walls and towers was done with whatever materials were available at the time of building. These materials may include things such as old debris, broken stones, old rubble found lying around and beaten earth or clay. The outside of the walls were then covered with hard-packed clay or lime plaster to hide the fact that the wall might not be very strong. It looked impenetrable but was, very weak. This was done so the enemy was prevented from knowing the reality of the construction! Our verse today tells us that the protection that God provides for us in made of “impenetrable” substance. The Hebrew word “strong” is the word meaning to have “strength, power, might; or an ability to exert a greater force or the ability to withstand a greater force.” It emphasizes the ability needed to withstand the attack!

As I mentioned above, towers were added to the structure in areas that were vulnerable to attack. The towers were manned by watchman that would alert the army to an impending attack. So it is with our lives. Each of us has vulnerable areas of our lives the are subject to attack from the enemy. James tells us that,

“But each one is tempted when he is dragged away, enticed and baited [to commit sin] by his own [worldly] desire (lust, passion). 15Then when the illicit desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin has run its course, it gives birth to death. 16Do not be misled, my beloved brothers and sisters” James 1:14-16 AMP

It is at those moments that we need to run into the “strong tower” of God’s protection. The Scripture does not say that the attack will not happen or not continue when the enemy comes. This verse clearly tell us that during the attack we can have a safe place of refuge! We read in the book of Proverbs,

“In the [reverent] fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, And His children will [always] have a place of refuge.” Proverbs 14:26 AMP

Where have you placed your strength today? The only true place of safety when the enemy attacks is in the strong tower of the Lord, for in His presence the overwhelming power of sin can be defeated! Have a victorious day, Pastor Ken
