“So prepare your minds for action, be completely sober [in spirit—steadfast, self-disciplined, spiritually and morally alert], fix your hope completely on the grace [of God] that is coming to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” 1 Peter 1:13 AMP
An excellent bit of information from the Apostle Peter! Our verse begins with the word “so.” If we want to be true to context, we should understand what he was previously talking about. The opening of the chapter tells us that he is writing to Christians that have been “scattered” because of their commitment to Christ. Peter reminds then that they have an “inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, unfading and reserved for them in Heaven,” and that the persecution they are experiencing will result is not comparable to the receiving of their salvation! We then read the cardinal verse of chapter 1.
“Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not even see Him now, you believe and trust in Him and you greatly rejoice and delight with inexpressible and glorious joy, 9receiving as the result [the outcome, the consummation] of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:8-9 AMP
Now he can say so, because of this….. Facing challenging times can be one of the most difficult things a Christian must do. Notice I said, “must do.” There is no guarantee that when we turn our lives over the Christ that everything comes up roses! The reality of challenges in fact is quite the opposite! Peter warned us that now we have an enemy who is actively seeking to destroy our faith.
“Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 AMP
We would be remiss to dismiss Peter’s warning. Jesus warned him that there was a coming trail that he would face.
“31“Simon, Simon (Peter), listen! Satan has demanded permission to sift [all of] you like grain; 32but I have prayed [especially] for you [Peter], that your faith [and confidence in Me] may not fail; and you, once you have turned back again [to Me], strengthen and support your brothers [in the faith].” Luke 22:31-32
Remember that not soon after, Peter denied the Lord three times but then on the day of Pentecost stands before the entire city and proclaims Jesus’ name! The key to our success in Christian living is found in our verse for today, “…fix your hope completely on the grace [of God] that is coming to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” If we can keep our focus and perspective from the heavenly position, then we can be steadfast, disciplined, spiritually and morally alert! Have a blessed day, Pastor Ken
