“The LORD will protect you from all evil; He will keep your life. The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in [everything that you do] From this time forth and forever.”
Psalm 121:7–8 AMP
Did you know that you are in the middle of a war? History reminds us that nations have always fought—over land, power, resources, and even trivial things. We see the devastation of war played out across the world, yet often from a distance that makes it feel removed from our daily lives. But there is another war—one that cannot be seen on the evening news. Scripture tells us:
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places. 13Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resist and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious].”Ephesians 6:12–13 AMP
This is the battle we are in. Our opening verse reminds us that the Lord is our protector. But we must understand what that means. God does not promise that we will never face conflict—He promises that He will guard and keep us as we walk with Him through it.
In battle, soldiers operate from a place of protection—a base, a fortress, a defensive position. Protection is not found by wandering outside that covering, but by remaining within it. Scripture gives us insight into this:
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, 8for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.” Proverbs 2:6–8 NIV
There is a connection between walking with God and experiencing His protection.
Yet many people move through life unaware of the battle around them—as if they are taking a casual walk rather than standing in a war zone.
In ancient times, a fortress had watchmen. Their responsibility was to stay alert, watching for any sign of danger. But over time, familiarity could lead to carelessness. When vigilance faded, the enemy found opportunity. The same is true for us. We are called to remain alert, to stand firm, and to put on the armor of God. We have a role to play in this spiritual battle.
But we do not stand alone.
“Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 15:57 AMP
Victory is not achieved through our strength—it is given through Christ.
So today, do not let your guard down. The enemy of our souls is patient and persistent. His mission is to deceive, destroy, and devour. But God has given us everything we need to stand firm. Stay alert. Stay grounded. Stay within His covering.
Reflection Question
Where in your life might you be letting your guard down instead of standing firm in the protection God has provided?
