“[Rather] is this not the fast which I choose, To undo the bonds of wickedness, To tear to pieces the ropes of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free And break apart every enslaving yoke?” Isaiah 58:6 AMP
The people of Israel were crying out to the Lord for deliverance. They brought a charge against God, questioning why He was not responding to their fasting and prayers. But the issue was not God’s silence, it was their hearts. God reveals the problem clearly:
“Yet they seek Me day by day and delight [superficially] to know My ways… ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and You do not see it?’… On the day of your fast you find something you desire [to do]…” Isaiah 58:2–3 AMP
They were going through the motions of worship while continuing to live for themselves. They were living in two worlds but expecting the benefits of both. This same issue appears in the New Testament. When Jesus confronted the religious leaders, He exposed the condition of their hearts:
“Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and robbery and self-indulgence (unrestrained greed). 26You [spiritually] blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the plate, examine and change your inner self to conform to God’s precepts, so that the outside your public life and deeds may be clean also.” Matthew 23:25–26 AMP
The problem was not their religious activity, it was their inward condition. They had turned the ways of God into a system of self-justification. So what does true devotion look like? Isaiah 58 gives us the answer:
True worship is not just fasting. It is not just outward discipline. It is a life that reflects the heart of God. It is seen in how we treat others. It is expressed in justice, compassion, and obedience. That can only happen when we have the same heart as the One who saved and called us! The Apostle Paul prayed that believers would truly know God:
“I always pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation [that gives you a deep and personal and intimate insight] into the true knowledge of Him [for we know the Father through the Son]. 18And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints (God’s people), 19and [so that you will begin to know] what the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His [active, spiritual] power is in us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength.” Ephesians 1:17-19 AMP
Because when we truly know Him, our lives begin to change from the inside out. Our actions begin to reflect His heart. Our devotion becomes real. Our actions begin to demonstrate what we really are called to do.
So the question is not:
Are we doing the right things outwardly? But rather: Is our heart aligned with God?
Jesus gave everything so that we could be free from the bondage of sin. Now He calls us to live differently, not just in appearance, but in truth and action.
Reflection Question
Is there an area of your life where your outward actions and your inward condition are not aligned?
Have a blessed day,
